My journey to this special day began a few years ago…

In August of 2005, I ended my cake decorating career with Safeway due to an injury. My landlord of 8 years was selling the house. My three children and I were one day away from being homeless when I finally found a place for us to live. Five months later, my house was red-tagged due to the winter flooding of the Russian River. I managed to relocate with my children, but had disappointed them and lost momentum and self-esteem in the process.

In an attempt to do my part and “stimulate the economy” this past weekend involved a trip to Ikea in Emeryville. For those of you who have experienced Ikea in person, you will know what I mean when I say that a trip to Ikea is somewhat of an event. Based on some of the groups of people walking into the store it might be akin to a trip to the Fair or even Disneyland for some families. And believe me, you can spend the same amount of money at Ikea that you can for a family of four to the Magic Kingdom...

A smile. Such a simple thing: easy to do, doesn’t cost a penny, and usually brightens up someone’s day. Lately my 17-month old daughter has started smiling and waving at everyone she sees. Be it family or complete strangers, she does not discriminate. I have started watching not only the reaction of the person she is greeting but hers as well. If the person appears happy and reacts in a positive manner to her smile my daughter will light up, sometimes even laughing or waving...
